A great new idea! Undersea cables linking islands to mainland generation has been done around the world. Could Puerto Rico be next?
In 2022, a company called Alternative Transmission said it could build the approximately 1000 mile transmission system for $5.5 billion to $6 billion. It called the plan “Project Equity,” and said it would deliver 2.1 gigawatts from up to two points on the east coast of the mainland to two points in Puerto Rico.
Another approach for Puerto Rico is my high-level idea from October 2017 in T&D World Magazine. Microgrids, underground, small modular nuclear and more.
The rebuild is starting. Let’s see how it develops.
