This is one of the most dramatic videos of the southern CA wildfire devastation that I have seen. It’s the Pacific Coast Highway along the ocean with smoldering ruins and downed poles with wires of every sort. It’s very sad.
How do you stop 50-70 mph Santa Ana winds that come every year?
“Wind gusts are expected to peak at 50-70 mph across portions of Southern California, with localized gusts of up to 80 mph,” according to AccuWeather meteorologist Fieweger. This would be the case for communities like Santa Clarita and Riverside. An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 100 mph is most likely in the mountains.
The answer to the above question is that you cannot stop the winds. But, you can rebuild the buildings and the civil and electrical infrastructure to be more resilient. After the Camp Fire, the PG&E bankruptcy, Lahaina, the firestorms in Colorado and recently in west Texas ….planners and engineers should have arrived at some basic understanding and principles to upgrade building codes for the safety of the public (and their property) that we serve.
